REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON TRADE IN FINANCIAL SERVICES
TO THE COUNCIL FOR TRADE IN SERVICES

The Committee on Trade in Financial Services held four formal meetings during 2000 on 13 April, 25 May, 13 July, and 9 October.
The Committee heard progress reports from all of those 10 Members: three of them expected to be able to accept by the end of the year and five indicated that domestic processes were underway, although with procedural delays, and that it was only a matter of time before their acceptances could be finalized.
Concerns have been expressed as to the objectives of this proposal as some delegations fail to see the relevance of the information that could be gathered to the Committee's work.
In view of the fact that some delegations regard granting observer status to be an issue with systemic implications, the Committee decided to defer its decision on this request until the conclusion of the ongoing discussion on observer status of intergovernmental organizations in the General Council.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON TRADE IN FINANCIAL SERVICES TO THE COUNCIL FOR TRADE IN SERVICES (2005)


Since its last annual report to the Council for Trade in Services (S/FIN/12), the Committee on Trade in Financial Services has held three formal meetings, on 23 November 2004, and 10 February and 23 June 2005. In this period, the Committee addressed the following matters: the acceptance of the Fifth Protocol to the General Agreement on Trade in Services; technical issues; recent developments in financial services trade; and a joint statement by a group of Members on financial services liberalization. Additionally, the Committee carried out the third transitional review of the implementation by China of its WTO commitments, pursuant to section 18 of the Protocol on the Accession of the People's Republic of China.

UPDATE TO THE ANNUAL REPORT OF 2002 OF THE COMMITTEE ON TRADE IN FINANCIAL SERVICES TO THE COUNCIL FOR TRADE IN SERVICES (2003)


1. Since its last annual report to the Council for Trade in Services, the Committee on Trade in Financial Services has held three formal meetings, on 2 December 2002, 26 February 2003, and 16 May 2003. Reports of those meetings are contained in documents S/FIN/M/38 to 40. In this period, the Committee addressed the following matters: the acceptance of the Fifth Protocol to the General Agreement on Trade in Services; technical issues; recent developments in financial services trade; and a presentation by the World Bank.
